10 Characteristics of Good Leadership

Sheila Viesca TalkShop CEO, explains, “Not everyone can engage people to follow him. The essence of leadership is cultivating relationships. A leader is therefore centered on building people, and in the process he earns their trust and wins them over.

What are the characteristics of good leadership? Viesca shares her list:

1. A good leader is a master at communication. He communicates his goals, vision, and direction clearly and purposively so everyone in the team knows where to go and how to best contribute. In addition, he is open and approachable. He is a good listener.

2. He is organized. He sets systems in place so work will run smoothly. He ensures that the environment is conducive for the individuals to constantly learn and perform at their best.

3. He is confident yet unassuming about his strengths. He does not berate his people. He mentors and coaches whenever appropriate. He reaches out to his team with the utmost sensibility and intention to understand and motivate them.

4. A leader is upright. His actions are defined by integrity. He does what is right, and inspires others to do the same. He adjusts to the needs and even to the work style of his team so that he may lead them better. All throughout, he never compromises his values.

5. He is calm and composed even in the midst of challenges. When dealing with difficult situations and people, he is courageous and upfront, and always takes the high road.

6. He keeps learning to stay current and relevant. He takes every opportunity to learn more about what he does. In the process, he brings his team with him so that they, too, will keep improving and growing.

7. He manages time and resources. He sets priorities, delegates while guiding his team, and can therefore work smart. He knows the value of time management, productive work, and quality rest. Observing these makes his team realize how much he values them and their time.

8. A leader takes action. He has a strong sense of urgency, knows what is expected of him, and is able to rally his team to deliver. He carries out tasks to completion. If something cannot be fully accomplished at a given time, he follows-through.

9. He is in sync with the people around him. He is sensitive towards others. He can read his people like a book. With regard their requirements and concerns, he is proactive not reactive. He anticipates what can be provided to make sure that everyone is able to focus on being the best at what he is doing.

10. He gives credit where it is due. He appreciates top performers and rewards them for the hard work. He is careful in his criticism but extremely generous in his praise. While he criticizes in private, he compliments his team openly.
