Can a Person be His Real Self on Social Media?

A person has 2 notions of self – his real self, consisting of his personality and attributes, and his ideal self that make up his aspirations and the status he aspires for. Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO notes, “Many people are overly concerned about how others view them. This is why many are hooked on Social Media. The friends, likes, and positive comments generated play up to a false sense of approval and belonging.”
Viesca advises, “It is best to work towards one’s ideal self while staying authentic to his real self.

One has to live his values, investing time and effort for what matters most to him. This is the way of realizing authentic self-esteem.Do not compare yourself with personas you encounter on Social Media, as these are ideal versions of others. Aim to stay true to who you are as you work on being your best self.”

“We refuse to turn off our computers, turn off our phone, log off Facebook, and just sit in silence, because in those moments we might actually have to face up to who we really are.” – Jefferson Bethke
