Do You Believe Sports Develop Character?

TalkShop Sports Shape CharacterPeople react differently towards sports. While many believe that it can shape character, some may view may view it as a waste of time and energy. Still, many believe it can shape character. Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO points out its benefits, “Character refers to the inner state of a person- his morality and ethics. While sports may not necessarily make all athletes upright, these can build character, and even fortify one’s moral foundation.

How does engaging in sports shape character? Viesca counts the ways:

1. Instills discipline. Showing up at practice sessions, working on drills, stretching oneself further, working hard through and through makes one a persevering person.

2. Fosters team spirit. Working with others enhances cooperation and interpersonal skills.

3. Cultivates faith. Sports lends one a feeling of confidence as one discovers his prowess, as well as the faith to win.

4. Develops strength of will. He has to summon great courage to engage himself in the throes of competition. He has to keep getting up each time he is knocked down.

5. Enhances Emotional Quotient (EQ). An athlete has to exhibit good leadership qualities that start with control of his emotions.

6. Teaches the art of winning and losing gracefully. Good winners are humble, while shallow winners gloat and demean the competition. And yes, there is victory in defeat when losers give their best and discover their true fighting spirit within.

7. Virtues carry over to life. An athlete’s experiences can drive him to succeed in life, as he draws from his reserves to cope with life’s stark realities.

Sportsmanship is not about winning at all costs. It is about playing for the fun of the sport, in the spirit of fairness and fellowship.
