Every Leader Must Learn to Coach

TalkShop LeadershipA leader is made from a special mold with the extraordinary task cut out for him. He needs to steer his team towards a shared purpose and vision. A leader takes on the added challenge of engaging people. It takes time, effort, and special skills to cultivate relationships and marshal the efforts of people towards success. A leader has to be a coach who connects with his team.

Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO, shares how leaders can become effective coaches:

1. Stay attuned to your team by taking the time to listen to your members. Guide each one to find a solution to their concerns.
2. Get to know your team. Learn to read your members and find out how to keep each one going at peak performance.
3. Identify the goals and make sure they are shared by all. Adopt the S.M.A.R.T. approach (Specific, Measurable, Attainable Realistic, Time-Bound). Guide your team through the process. Clear goals give them a sense of job ownership.
4. Be approachable but draw the line as needed. A coach has to demonstrate a caring attitude, but should be firm when the situation calls for it.
5. Collaborate with your team. Give everyone the opportunity to speak up and contribute. Keep communication lines open between management and your team.
6. Develop the talents of your team. Draw out the leader in each one.
7. Praise the team for accomplishments and egg them on to the next challenge.

In touching lives, leaders who coach effectively find the purpose that make life more meaningful. Develop the inner coach in your Team Leaders to drive the success of your business. TalkShop programs draw out the heart in every leader through their Coaching, Mentoring, and Leadership Training programs. For queries, call 894-5588 or log on to www.talkshop.ph.
