Master Speed Reading Skills

TalkShop speed readingReading is fun, but it can be time-consuming if you are not a fast reader. To lessen the time you spend reading a book, magazine, or newspaper, you have to improve your speed, and along with it, your comprehension.

Most people don’t realize the importance of speed reading skills. As you read faster, you will also develop other useful abilities that you can use in your daily life. Reading faster can help you increase your ability in consuming information, acquire new insights, deepen your perspectives in particular areas of learning. Eventually what you read will serve you well in your communication, both spoken and written.

What is wonderful is that it is not so hard to learn how to master speed reading skills:

1. Know your material.

Some people have a tendency to skip chunks of words in the materials they are reading, choosing to “skim the surface” in an effort to get the gist of the material. They do this to save time and energy when reading. While this tendency can double your reading speed, it can also put you at a disadvantage when you miss out on important ideas and underlying meanings. If you must speed read, make sure to devote a least 5% of your reading time knowing what the material is about. Having this overview will make you more systematic in managing and pacing your reading.

2. Set your objectives.

Speed reading is not just about going faster. There are some materials that need to be given more time. There are those that only need to be browsed. Know how you are going to read certain materials by identifying your objective for reading them.

3. Make reading a daily habit.

Practice makes perfect. When you read consistently, you will notice your reading rate and comprehension improving. At the same time, once you develop the habit of reading, it becomes more enjoyable and even therapeutic. Start by reading materials that interest you. Then progress to those that allow you to contribute to conversations with people you usually interact with.

4. Make reading a priority

Set a specific time when you will do nothing but read. Eliminating distractions will also help your reading speed and comprehension greatly. Go to the library. Find your corner in the house. Go to the park. Wherever it is, bring a book to read. You can fast track your personal improvement and adeptness at certain skills when you make reading a priority.
