TalkShop’s Advanced Negotiation Training Tackles the Different Personality Types

TalkShop Negotiation Skills TrainingDifferent personality types vary in their negotiation styles and approaches. It pays to know not only the skills and mechanics involved, but the personalities as well. Most importantly, it pays to know one’s self.

In TalkShop’s Advanced Negotiation and Assertiveness Training, participants are oriented on the different personality types and how some people negotiate aggressively to embrace the risks, while others do it passively to avoid the risks.

Some personality types can be intimidating negotiators who project rudeness, while others can be so accommodating that they end up being manipulated.

The best way to adjust and negotiate successfully with these different personality types is to be aware of our tendencies and be flexible in our approach. Learning the right skills and practicing assertiveness can make one succeed in any negotiation situation.

TalkShop CEO Sheila Viesca said, “Assertiveness is a wonderful trait to have in any negotiation because with it, people learn to speak sensibly, at the right moment. It is the ability to state one’s opinions calmly and be open minded to the opinions of others. There is a big difference between the tendency to look for conflict (aggressiveness) and to meet it head on to arrive at a solution that will work best for both parties (assertiveness).”

The problem is that strong assertiveness can be seen as aggressiveness, while relaxed assertiveness is seen as passive behavior that is usually taken advantage of. It takes training and practice to recognize when and how to fine tune the assertiveness in negotiation. A big part of the process is the way we respond and react to questions, especially when under pressure.

TalkShop incorporates the understanding of the different personality types in its latest negotiation program to address the reality that there are personality types that are outspoken and highly responsive while others are more reflective, or introverted. In the end, understanding one’s personality and others’ makes one a truly successful negotiator. Negotiation, after all, is about building relationships while winning the argument. I have learned a lot from TalkShop’s advanced course on Negotiation Skills and Assertive Communication even if it was conducted in just one day. The design of the workshop is apt for my job. I like the discussion on the various personality types/Enneagram. The results really matched how I perceive my own personality and how others see me. I learned that we negotiate not to arrive at a compromise but to win – assertive communication can help achieve this.
