Transformational Leadership

TalkShop continues to innovate its leadership programs as it extends the Transformational Leadership training to movers and shakers who seek to understand, develop, and inspire greatness that will bring their visions to life, help them realize their dreams, and transcend their influence to a grander level.

Transformational leadership is leadership that shifts the energy of a person, place, or thing to higher order. This is in stark contrast to transactional leadership which is when a leader attempts to create a desired result through the reward of something valued. The term transformational leadership has been around since the early 1970’s. Since then, Transformational leadership has developed into a leadership theory and practice that is largely agreed upon to contain four key components:

  • Transformational leaders tend to have charisma or an idealized influence on other people. They tend to know their values, live them, and inspire others to do so as well.
  • Transformational leaders inspire and motivate by the passion of purpose and also ignite the passion of others around them.
  • Transformational leaders are courageous and inspire others to be courageous as well, expanding beyond preconceived ideas and artificial boundaries of a person place or thing. Transformational leaders are agents of change. This change comes because they act in courage and responsibility on the strength of their convictions and thus inspire others to do the same.
  • Transformational leaders recognize and foster the growth of the individual’s self-actualization, self-fulfillment, and self-worth, so that each person’s strengths and unique gifts can be a tool to effect change for the greater good.

The French writer Atoine de Saint-Exupery once wrote, “Perhaps love is the process of my leading you gently back to yourself.” This is the best description I know with regard what a transformational leader does. We all have the capacity in any moment to be a transformational leader for each other. Even the simple act of returning excess change to a convenience store clerk has within the moment the opportunity to shift your energy and those of around you.
