Decide to Be Assertive

Assertiveness is a must-have communication skill no doubt. It gives the boost to one’s well-being initially and ultimately plays a big role in one’s success. Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO notes, “In many cultures where social conformance is taken to an extreme, assertiveness is neither taught nor practiced. Hence, children grow up not learning to assert themselves nor express their opinions. As adults, they have a problem saying no, deal with pent up emotions, and do not get to fully develop their capacity to sensibly interact.”

She clarifies that, “Assertiveness allows one to stand his ground a diplomatic manner. It is a matter of expressing one’s self to establish boundaries, while respecting others’. Assertiveness creates strong relationships through understanding, enhanced self-esteem, and mutual respect. It entails clear, direct, communication without any hidden agenda.” She offers these tips on assertiveness:

1. Respect your reactions. Emotions are natural and healthy.

2. Express your feeling and thoughts. Talk constructively.

3. Be courteous and in control throughout. Explain your side and be open to the other party’s side of the issue.

4. Validate the other’s feelings.

5. Strive to keep the atmosphere positive.

6. Reach an understanding and be collaborative.

“Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man, you take it.” -― Malcolm X
